"Mike and Alan fixed our doors so that they open, close and lock with no effort. I would
recommend JED as the only place to go for any

BROKEN DOORS IN DURHAM
JED specialise in repairing PVCu and aluminium doors, fitting new locks, hinges and hardware
throughout Durham.
Most problems with PVCu doors revolve around poor
original installation of the door which results in the
door sash dropping in the frame causing the door to
drag over the frame at the bottom. This in turn
makes the lock difficult to operate and extra force
required to close. This extra force results in a
strained door locking mechanism often stripping the
gears in the lock and preventing the door from
opening. Early diagnosis of the problem can stop this
happening, the door can be adjusted and relocated
in the frame allowing the locks to engage correctly.
Damaged or worn locking mechanisms can be
replaced and we stock most of the popular makes.
COMPOSITE DOOR REPAIRS
IN DURHAM
Composite doors are the latest development in
replacement doors and work on a different
principle having a solid door leaf or slab, available
in a range of colours and designs fitting into the
door frame rebate providing a smooth appearance
as opposed to fitting over the edge of the frame in
a PVCu panel door. The doors are of a cellular
construction and are extremely strong and virtually
unbreakable, The doors rely on a woolpile draught
seal and usually are locked with a double hook lock
mechanism with six lever dead lock.
DOOR PANEL REPAIRS IN DURHAM
Feature door panels are mainly confined to PVCu doors but some do
occur in aluminium doors. Those in PVCu doors vary in thickness
and density. There are many designs but the important features are
in the construction. In the early days of door panel production little
was known of the colour fading effects of sunlight. Soon lots of door
panels changed colour giving a two tone appearance to the door
because the higher grade PVCu used in the door frame remained
white. Also the doors were constructed using polystyrene foam as a
filler between the outer decorative skins. This resulted in flimsy
doors with "kick out" door panels. All of our door panels are fully
reinforced with high grade MDF together with polystyrene for
insulation and are guaranteed against colour fade. By replacing the
panel the whole image of the door can be changed as well as
increasing security. Please telephone for a quotation.
HINGE REPAIR IN DURHAM
Older PVCu doors are fitted with "pencil" hinges, tubular in shape
and non adjustable. These can be replaced if broken, and
replacements also usually provide some adjustment of the door.
Newer doors are fitted with three way "pad" hinges. These hinges
are fitted to the face of the door and provide adjustment in three
directions similar to kitchen cupboard hinges. These hinges are
generally stronger but casting failure can result in breakage.
Replacements are readily available.
ALUMINIUM DOOR
REPAIR IN DURHAM
Aluminium doors usually rely on a
mortice type lock and possibly shoot
bolts at the top and bottom. As
these doors are becoming rare the
components to repair are becoming
more scarce. Each door must be
appraised for availability of parts.
